Too Hot to Handle: How to Spot Heat Exhaustion in Kids

Why Kids Are More at Risk for Heat Exhaustion

Young children can’t regulate body temperature as efficiently as adults. Add in high humidity, outdoor play, and sometimes a little forgetfulness about water breaks—and it’s easy for kids to overheat fast.

Early Warning Signs of Heat Exhaustion in Kids

Keep an eye out for these signs:

  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded

  • Heavy sweating

  • Cool, clammy skin

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Muscle cramps

  • Headache

  • Increased thirst

  • Irritability or confusion

These symptoms may come on quickly, especially after physical activity in the heat.

What to Do if You Think Your Child Has Heat Exhaustion

Act fast to prevent things from progressing to heat stroke:

  1. Move to a cooler place. Shade or air conditioning is best.

  2. Offer fluids. Water or an electrolyte drink—skip sugary or caffeinated beverages.

  3. Cool the body down. Use a fan, damp cloths, or a cool (not cold) shower.

  4. Rest. Encourage quiet time until your child feels better.

If symptoms don’t improve within 30 minutes—or worsen—call your pediatrician.

Know the Difference: Heat Exhaustion vs. Heat Stroke

Heat exhaustion is serious, but heat stroke is an emergency.

Call 911 immediately if your child:

  • Has hot, dry skin (not sweating)

  • Is confused or unresponsive

  • Has a high body temperature

  • Is having trouble breathing or experiencing seizures

Pediatrician-Approved Prevention Tips

To keep your little ones safe:

  • Encourage frequent water breaks

  • Dress them in lightweight, breathable clothing

  • Avoid outdoor play during peak heat (usually 10am–4pm)

  • Use fans, cooling towels, or misters

  • Plan shaded activities when possible

  • Don’t rely on thirst—offer water proactively
