Is It Allergies or a Cold?: A Pediatrician’s Guide to Telling the Difference

One of the most common questions I hear this time of year is: “How do I know if my child has allergies or just a cold?”

Both can cause sneezing, runny noses, and congestion, so it’s easy to mix them up! But there are a few key clues that can help you tell the difference and get your child the right care.

Allergies: The Usual Suspects

Allergies happen when your child’s immune system overreacts to things like pollen, pet dander, or dust. They’re not contagious, but they can definitely make your little one feel uncomfortable.

Signs it might be allergies:

  • Itchy eyes, nose, or throat

  • Sneezing fits

  • Clear, watery mucus

  • No fever

  • Symptoms linger or come and go with the season

If your child’s constantly rubbing their nose (“the allergic salute”) or has the same symptoms every spring or fall, it’s likely allergies.

Colds: The Viral Villain

Colds are caused by viruses and spread easily, especially among toddlers and preschoolers.

Signs it might be a cold:

  • Fever, especially in the first few days

  • Thick or green nasal mucus

  • Cough, sore throat, or body aches

  • Symptoms improve in 7–10 days

  • Recent exposure to someone sick

Colds often come on quickly and resolve in about a week, while allergies can linger for weeks or more.

When to Call Your Pediatrician

Always trust your instincts as a parent. If something feels off, reach out.

You should call your pediatrician if:

  • Your child has a fever that lasts more than 3 days

  • Symptoms worsen instead of getting better

  • You're unsure and want help figuring it out

We’ll help determine what’s going on and recommend the right care, whether that’s rest and hydration or pediatric-safe allergy meds.
